Synthroid Levothyroxine Sodium: Side Effects, Uses, Dosage, Interactions, Warnings

Consumption of certain foods may affect SYNTHROID absorption thereby necessitating adjustments in dosing see DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION. Soybean flour, cottonseed meal, walnuts, and dietary fiber may bind and decrease the absorption of SYNTHROID from the gastrointestinal tract. Grapefruit juice may delay the absorption of levothyroxine and reduce its bioavailability. Concurrent use of tyrosine-kinase inhibitors such as imatinib may cause hypothyroidism. Monitor serum free-T4 levels and maintain in the upper half of the normal range in these patients.

So, it’s not synthroid binders just treating a number and following the TSH, it’s also making sure that the patient’s symptoms have improved. A key part for the patients is to make sure that they’re getting the brand-name SYNTHROID that we have prescribed. And, as a practicing thyroid specialist, I have extensive clinical experience with using this medication. In addition to testing TSH, sometimes it may be important to run other labs such as a free T4, in addition to the TSH, to ensure you have accurate dosing in the medication.

WARNINGS AND PRECAUTIONS

And I, personally, have a patient information sheet that I provide them that goes over some of these important details. So, getting the patients on the right dose, but maintaining them on the right dose, is also very important. Primary hypothyroidism is basically diagnosed off of a screening TSH, or thyroid stimulating hormone. Euthyrox (levothyroxine) is used to treat hypothyroidism and to treat or prevent goiter.

• Monitor for cardiac arrhythmias during surgical procedures in patients with coronary artery disease receiving suppressive SYNTHROID therapy.
• Stop biotin and biotin-containing supplements for at least 2 days prior to thyroid testing.
• Assess the adequacy of therapy by periodic assessment of laboratory tests and clinical evaluation.
• Closely monitor coagulation tests to permit appropriate and timely dosage adjustments.

SYNTHROID is indicated in adult and pediatric patients, including neonates, as a replacement therapy in primary (thyroidal), secondary (pituitary), and tertiary (hypothalamic) congenital or acquired hypothyroidism. Myxedema coma is a life-threatening emergency characterized by poor circulation and hypometabolism and may result in unpredictable absorption of levothyroxine sodium from the gastrointestinal tract. Use of oral thyroid hormone drug products is not recommended to treat myxedema coma. Administer thyroid hormone products formulated for intravenous administration to treat myxedema coma. HypothyroidismSYNTHROID® (levothyroxine sodium) tablets, for oral use is indicated as a replacement therapy in primary (thyroidal), secondary (pituitary), and tertiary (hypothalamic) congenital or acquired hypothyroidism.

• Because the long-acting nature of the medication, I do indicate that it may take several months to see an improvement in both of these levels.
• Pregnancy, infectious hepatitis, estrogens, estrogen-containing oral contraceptives, and acute intermittent porphyria increase TBG concentration.
• Dosing here should be individualized based on whether the patients were diagnosed with hypothyroidism prior to pregnancy or during the pregnancy.
• The FDA has determined that certain levothyroxine products are interchangeable.

Serum digitalis glycoside levels may decrease when a hypothyroid patient becomes euthyroid, necessitating an increase in the dose of digitalis glycosides. Many drugs can inhibit Synthroid’s adsorption by the body; other medications may increase or decrease its effectiveness once it is adsorbed. Providing a complete list of medications to the doctor will help with getting the correct dose established for each individual patient. The importance of writing “Dispense as Written,” or using the state-specific language for SYNTHROID, is something I discuss with my staff as well. This is important as 32% of patients who think they are on SYNTHROID are actually not given this because substitutions are made at the pharmacy. 54% of prescriptions for SYNTHROID were not protected with a DAW or state-specific language in one study.
